Volunteer of the Month: March 2018

Sandra Duvic

Since she started volunteering in January of 2016, Sandra Duvic has already made in indelible impression on our organization and the community. Beginning by volunteering one day a week in the Volunteer Services Department, Sandra then expanded to three days a week in three different areas. In fact, her “work” in Volunteer Services and the Emergency Department was so inspiring, when the EJ Women’s Clinic needed a volunteer one day a week, they specifically requested if Sandra could fill the role. She did and has not stopped impressing everyone with whom she comes in contact. Sandra, like so many of our volunteers, embodies the very best of our hospital, our community and our nation. She is selfless and committed to contributing to a greater good. We thank her for her commitment.

East Jefferson General Hospital offers you a way to meet your school's community service requirement, while learning more about a future career in healthcare. But the benefits don't stop there.

Volunteer - It's Good For You

When you volunteer you both give and receive. Through volunteering, you can:

  • Meet new people. Volunteering allows you to meet others with similar interests and make new friends. You might even make contacts for future internships or employment opportunities.
  • Learn new skills such as working as part of a team, setting and reaching goals, and the importance of guest services.
  • Explore a healthcare career. Find out more about your career options and what areas of healthcare you might be best at and most enjoy.
  • Add to your college or job application. Volunteering shows you can make a commitment and stick to it. It also shows others you are willing to help improve our community.

Join Our Team

It's easy. If you've completed the eighth grade, are 14 years of age, and want to volunteer, just follow these steps:

  • Fill out an application.
You can also come by our Volunteer Services office, located on the first floor of the hospital, or give us a call at (504) 503-5548 and we'll send you an application in the mail. You can also apply online by clicking here.
  • Come in for an interview.
Once your application is received, a Volunteer Services team member will contact you to schedule an interview. The interview is your chance to tell us about your abilities and interests. This information helps us match you with a department that will benefit from your skills, and where you can make the most of your talents.
  • Attend orientation.
All volunteers must attend an orientation session before beginning their assignments. Orientation is your introduction to the hospital, its team, and your fellow volunteers. You'll learn about hospital policies and standards, as well as our expectations of you as a volunteer.
  • Get medical clearance.
Volunteers must submit a physician's clearance to join the volunteer program. You must also make an appointment with the Volunteer Services health nurse to have a TB skin test.
  • Make a commitment.
Junior volunteers must commit to 50 hours of service per year.
