Nursing is the cornerstone of great hospital care. Of our 2600 team members, more than two-thirds of them are nurses. While physicians dictate care, nurses are the ones ensuring that care is provided in a professional, caring, manner that places the patient first.
East Jefferson General Hospital has a reputation for nursing excellence that is known throughout the nation. Each year, the state nursing association selects Louisiana's Top 100 Nurses. For the last decade, not a single one of these lists has come out without a representative from East Jefferson General Hospital being named. On more than one occasion, more than 10 EJGH nurses made that list.
One reason for the nursing excellence at EJGH is the commitment to ADVANCED NURSING DEGREES. EJGH leads the region in advanced clinical nursing. Our cardiology and oncology divisions have well above the national average in nurses who have advanced degrees or training specific to the care of heart and cancer patients. That advanced training translates into higher outcomes and more comfort for you and your doctor when choosing your hospital.
Louisiana's Only Four-Time Magnet Hospital
Perhaps nothing speaks to our commitment to nursing excellence more than our status as a Magnet Hospital. In 2002, East Jefferson General Hospital became Louisiana's first nurse Magnet hospital for our excellence in nursing care. We are now proud to announce that East Jefferson has been certified as a Magnet facility for the fourth consecutive time. Out of over 6,000 eligible facilities in the United States, we are only the 52nd hospital to achieve this designation. We are also the only four-time accredited hospital in the region.
Magnet hospital designation is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The overall goal of the ANCC is to identify the institutions that act as a "magnet" by creating a work environment that recognizes and rewards professional nursing. It means that your community hospital upholds high standards of patient care.
The Magnet Nursing Services Recognition Program for Excellence in Nursing Services was developed in 1994 to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and support professional nursing practice. The program also provides a vehicle for sharing successful practices and strategies among nursing systems.
For patients, the program provides the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care they can expect to receive. Achieving this status creates an effect beyond the nursing department that filters into the entire healthcare team.
The Joint Commission certifies hospital as a national Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
East Jefferson General Hospital has just been recognized as an Advanced Primary Stroke Care Center by the Joint Commission and was awarded their Gold Seal for quality of care. This distinction signifies that EJGH has implemented the stringent, national guidelines needed for high-level stroke care.
The Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluate for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.
An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. The Joint Commission's Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's statements and guidelines for stroke care.
