Patient Services

Working in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Foundation, MD Anderson Cancer Network and others, we offer a wide array of services designed to assist you in your cancer journey. These begin with your journal. The cancer journal tracks your journey and contains valuable information on our hospital, your treatment, terminology, and other helpful resources to provide answers to many questions for you and your family. We know that nothing is more frightening than the unknown. Through these programs, we attempt to fulfill your needs but also provide a network of support.

Your Cancer Care Navigator

In 2007, when East Jefferson General Hospital became a member of the MD Anderson Cancer Network, EJGH introduced Debbie Schmitz as their first ever Cancer Care Navigator. Debbie's previous experience in the EJGH Breast Care Center had perfectly prepared her for this very unique role in providing one-on-one resources to patients and their families. From the start, Debbie was able to help reduce or in many cases, eliminate any confusion that patients had historically dealt with in battling cancer.

Once diagnosed, cancer patients enter a world of unfamiliar terminologies, appointments, treatments and medications. The navigator's function is to eliminate the mystery and uncertainty of care and help streamline the process so all the patient has to think about is getting well.

Today, the navigator program at EJGH has grown to include specific navigators for breast, prostate and lung cancers. It also has proved so successful that it is being adopted by other hospitals and across other service lines such as cardiology and orthopedics.

The Cancer Care Navigator Program is just one innovation that is helping EJGH create new survivors every day.
