The Foundation gratefully acknowledges Susan G. Komen for the Cure New Orleans for awarding a $5,000 grant to support patient education at East Jefferson General Hospital and throughout the community.

The grant will allow Cancer Care Navigator Debbie Schmitz, RN, to purchase breast self-exam models as well as more general educational materials related to cancer patient and family wellness and care. The models are portable and will be used for all community health education programs that EJGH participates in - including the Jefferson Parish Senior Expo and breast health presentations at local schools, companies, organizations and clubs.

Debbie SchmitzWhen the new Outpatient Oncology Infusion Center is completed this year, the materials will be housed in the state-of-the-art multi-media Cancer Resource Library. The library will also include a collection of literature, DVDs and other educational materials for patients to browse, read or check out to take home. Nurses and other health professionals working with the patients and their families will make recommendations and help patients select the materials that will enhance their education about their specific medical issues, as well as mental, spiritual and/or family concerns.

"Our cancer program here at East Jefferson hinges on the ability to actively engage our patients and make them a pivotal part of their care plan," says Schmitz. "To do that, we need to make sure they are educated on their treatment options. The material we are able to secure through this grant will allow us to provide education that is clear and easy to understand. We cannot thank the Susan G. Komen Foundation enough for these invaluable tools."
