East Jefferson General Hospital

About the Program

The Podiatry Residency Program welcomed its first resident in 1989. From inception, 100% of the residents have successfully graduated from the program and successfully passed board-qualifying exams.

The Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) has approved the program as a PMSR-36 with added credential in Reconstructive Rearfoot / Ankle Surgery.

For the first two years of the three-year program, much of the training is hospital based. While the emphasis is surgery, currently the first year resident rotates through:

  • Anesthesia
  • Dermatology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Orthopedics
  • Pathology
  • Radiology
  • Rehab/PT
  • Wound Care

Second year training includes:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Orthopedics
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Rheumotology
  • Vascular
  • Wound Care

Third year training includes more of the above with the addition of:

  • Behavioral Medicine
  • General Surgery

Residents spend time in private podiatry practices where patient care management and office management experience is obtained. The residents are exposed to many podiatric and non-podiatric teaching faculties to draw on a wide variety of clinical and surgical experiences.
