Overview

East Jefferson General Hospital is committed to providing its patients (you) with access to emergency and medically necessary care regardless of their ability to pay. Financial assistance is available to all patients who qualify.

Availability of Financial Assistance

You may be able to get financial assistance if you do not have insurance for services at East Jefferson General Hospital. Please note that there are certain services that are not typically eligible for financial assistance, including but not limited to cosmetic services and/or other services.

Eligibility Requirements

Financial Assistance is generally determined by a sliding scale to total household income based on the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). If you and/or the responsible party’s income combined are at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, you do not have and are not eligible to have insurance, and you complete the Financial Assistance Application process, you will have no financial responsibility for the qualified care given by East Jefferson General Hospital. If you fall between 200% and 400% you may be eligible for discounted rates for the care received. No person eligible for financial assistance under the financial assistance plan will be charged more than 50% or a lesser percentage of gross charges. Availability of Translations

The Financial Assistance policy, application forms, and plain language summary is available in English and Spanish. East Jefferson General Hospital may elect to furnish translation aids, translation guides, or provide assistance through use of qualified bilingual interpreter by request. How to Apply

The application process involves filling out the financial assistance form and submitting the completed form along with supporting documents to East Jefferson General Hospital for processing. ADA Grievance Procedure

This Grievance Procedure is established to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ("ADA"). It may be used by anyone who wishes to file a complaint alleging discrimination on the basis of disability in the provision of services, activities, programs, or benefits by the East Jefferson General Hospital. The Personnel Policy governs employment-related complaints of disability discrimination.

The complaint should be in writing and contain information about the alleged discrimination such as name, address, phone number of complainant and location, date, and description of the problem. Alternative means of filing complaints, such as personal interviews or a tape recording of the complaint will be made available for persons with disabilities upon request.

The complaint should be submitted by the grievant and her designee as soon as possible but no later than 60 calendar days after the alleged violation to:

Within 15 calendar days after receipt of the complaint, The ADA Coordinator or the designee will meet with the complainant to discuss the complaint and the possible resolutions. Within 15 calendar days of the meeting, the ADA Coordinator or the designee will respond in writing, and where appropriate, in a format accessible to the complainant, such as large print, Braille, or audio tape. The response will explain the position of the East Jefferson General Hospital and offer options for substantive resolution of the complaint.

All written complaints received by the ADA Coordinator or the designee will be retained by East Jefferson General Hospital for at least three years.

Give Blood-Save a Life

Did you know at East Jefferson General Hospital more than 1,000 units of blood and blood components are transferred each month but only 20 percent comes from our own donor center? The Blood Bank, an accredited Advancing Transfusion and Cellular Therapies Worldwide (AABB) facility, acquires the remaining 80 percent from outside sources. The consequences of an inadequate blood supply can be life threatening. Blood donations can only come from a human blood donor. Volunteer blood donors make the difference, ensuring that there will be blood available when it is needed by our patients.

Who can donate blood?
In order to donate, you should be at least 17 years old and weigh over 110 pounds. You should be in good health, with no history of AIDS, hepatitis, heart disease or certain types of cancer. Most prescription drugs are acceptable for blood donations. If unsure regarding your prescription, please call the Blood Bank. All blood types are needed and valuable.

How easy is it to donate?
The whole process takes 30 minutes. Bring your ID and eat before you donate. There will be a questionnaire form to fill out regarding your medical history. A free mini-physical will be performed, where we check your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin level. The actual donation will take approximately 10 minutes. Now your blood is ready to help save a life!

Donate platelets - save a life.
Platelets are small cells which are made in the bone marrow and released into the bloodstream to help control bleeding. People with certain illnesses, especially cancer, have difficulty producing enough platelets and require frequent platelet transfusions. With a storage life of only 5 days, platelets donations are continually needed in order to maintain an adequate inventory for the needs of our patients.

Who can donate platelets?
Requirements for platelet donations are similar to the blood donation requirements. However, no aspirin-containing products can be ingested within three days of donation.

How do I donate platelets?
The whole process takes approximately 60 minutes. A platelet count is done prior to the donation. During the platelets transfusion, less than one pint of blood is removed from your arm. Please call the Blood Bank for more information regarding platelet donation.

The Blood Bank Donation Center is located on the second floor of the Domino Pavilion. It is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 6 pm, and Saturday from 8am to 11:30am. Walk-ins are welcomed but appointments are encouraged for your convenience.  

Action/Reflection Model of Education

The action/reflection model of education is the foundation for learning in the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH). It is process learning. It is a model that begins with a clinical experience, followed with reflection of the experience that generates critical feedback, consultation, and hopefully, new insight that can be utilized in the next clinical experience. 

Interviews

A face-to face interview is required for all programs.  The applicant incurs travel expenses for interviews. Applying to a program does not assume that an interview is automatically to follow. For the residency group, experience in ministry and an awareness of the CPE model of learning is required. Such experience is best demonstrated through one unit of ACPE CPE.

The ACPE CPE interview process is more than a job interview, but an interview concerning the applicant’s ability for self-reflection, self-awareness, personal flexibility and an ability and willingness to learn about self.

Clinical Pastoral Education Program Information

Residency Year (Level I and Level II) – Four Unit Program – 12 months, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with shared on-call responsibilities during the weeknights and weekend days.  Responsibilities include assigned areas of the hospital where pastoral care is provided to patients, family members and staff; on-call responsibilities that are shared with peers; participation in the ACPE CPE curriculum; participation in the continued growth and functioning of the Pastoral Care Department. Stipend provided. Tuition is charged.

Requirements for the Residency Position:  Must have completed a high school education.  College degree and seminary education from an institution recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation is required for the Residency Program.  One unit of ACPE CPE is preferred.  Ordination and/or ecclesiastical endorsement preferred.  At least two-years of ministry experience is strongly preferred that demonstrates an ability to minister during crisis and in a constantly changing environment.

Completed ACPE application form; written (updated) document that responds to #2-#6 on the application form; a verbatim that reflects applicant’s ministry; supervisor’s and self- evaluation(s); $25.00 nonrefundable application fee.
